As a mom, strolling through farmers markets with my children has been incredibly rewarding, creating some of my fondest memories.
Shopping at farmer markets is more than just about getting fresh produce; it supports local families. I still frequent the Beebe Auction and Sale and enjoy discovering other local markets.
As a farmer's granddaughter, my summer mornings often began before sunrise on my grandparents' modest farm in England, Arkansas. Saturdays meant heading to the Beebe Sale, pulling up in my dad’s old pickup to sell our chickens, rabbits, eggs, shelled purple hull peas, and canned tomatoes right from the tailgate, all while enjoying the tunes of pickers and singers. Our truck would often leave filled with treasures bought from other local vendors. I once complained to my father about getting up so early, and working so hard in the garden, and his response was swift: "Do you want to eat?" The farm's produce and meat were crucial during some tough winters in the '80s. I grew to deeply appreciate the farm, recognizing that our hard work secured not just meals, but a stable future for our family.
